As one of two areas of emphasis offered by the Communication Arts program, Illustration guides students to develop a strong personal style in their images and use their image-making skills to refine their own self-directed creative practices, as well as support the communication needs of a variety of clients in multiple contexts. Illustration majors prepare for careers as professional Illustrators, art directors, storyboard artists, comic book writers, children’s book illustrators, exhibition designers, textile and fabric designers, and muralists. The other area of emphasis is Graphic Design. The College also offers an Advertising Design minor.

Contemporary illustration ranges in application from client-led publications and merchandise to self-directed projects and exhibitions. A faculty of working professionals guides majors through a curriculum that emphasizes strong concepts, technical proficiency, and the development of a unique style and voice. Visiting artists, conventions, field trips, and student exhibitions support a rich community for emerging illustrators. Recent employers and clients of graduates include Disney, Nike, Hurley International, Chronicle Books, LA Weekly, College of the Canyons, and Davis Elen Advertising.
