Otis College’s MFA Fine Arts program is composed of advanced artists who are committed to exploring art practices in various forms, traditions, and contexts. The two-year program promotes experimentation through the development of individual studio practice. Students engage in interdisciplinary critical dialogue and form a close-knit community throughout their studies. Opportunities for students to curate and show their work is an essential element to the Otis program.

Starting this month and running through May, second-year MFA Fine Arts candidates will exhibit their thesis shows in Otis’s Bolsky Gallery on campus, after which the exhibitions will be available for online viewing in virtual galleries. New shows will be installed throughout the spring semester, and students are available to discuss their work during in-person receptions held during their respective exhibitions.

“The Otis MFA thesis shows mark the moment when students move from making individual works to articulating a practice,” says Meg Cranston, chair of the BFA and MFA Fine Arts programs at Otis. “Students are presenting their work at a scale and level of seriousness that most artists don’t reach until much later—offering a fully realized body of work, something many professional artists wait years to do.”

In representing the culmination of graduate students’ intensive study and creative exploration, each project is a reflection of their unique vision, research, and technical expertise. The shows offer a glimpse into the future of contemporary art.

“The thesis exhibitions draw strong audiences from across Los Angeles and beyond,” says Cranston. “Over time, they have become something the Los Angeles art community actively watches. Real opportunities grow out of these shows—conversations, exhibitions, and professional relationships that extend well beyond graduation.”
