Chemical Impressions

A solo exhibition by Kimberly Gutierrez

Otis College of Art and Design is proud to present Chemical Impressions, an exhibition by MFA Fine Arts candidate Kimberly Gutierrez.

In Chemical Impressions, the artist moves beyond the mechanical camera, pushing the boundaries of what a photograph is by working light sensitive materials that decay and fade over the course of time. These photographs are soft, distorted, and abstracted like a memory. Kimberly reimagines her childhood and family photographs to talk about the in between stages of recollection, absence, and different chapters of her life. She states that it is like entering through a time-machine, an inventory of memories that she is unable to relive again, only able to observe from a distance.

Kimberly further traces her family’s history in a small rancho in Michoacan, Mexico, indexing a mixture of discarded objects in their physical and energetic form. Alongside, from childhood and family photographs, the exhibition showcases her parent’s former home, now abandoned, a space where many joyful and heart-wrenching moments were formed.
