Bella Feinstein
immagine in versa Picture in Verse Picture in Verse brings together a collection of archival photographs selected by artist and curator Bella Feinstein. In this presentation, the images are turned over, the pictorial plane obscured, and the back of the photograph enlarged to command focus on the details that represent time itself. Culled from personal and found collections, the works on view evoke both historical distance and a deliberate withholding of visual information. Instead of presenting the photograph as a window onto what was, the exhibition foregrounds the buildup on its reverse—handwriting, stamps, and fingerprints—that testify to the document's passage through different hands and contexts. As the physicality of photography recedes into obsolescence, the exhibition investigates the impulse to collect, select, and hold onto images. By shifting attention away from the picture and towards its objectality, Picture in Verse opens a space where multiple memories can coexist. In turn, the photograph becomes a site for imagination—one where absence meets desire, preservation meets occlusion, and where respect is shown to something not fully representable, and that is history itself. Some images may be cropped.
