This was one of the first projects I did upon coming to Otis, and is one of my favorite works to this day. It is called 'Self Portrait- Payasa' and is about my experience with social anxiety and being unable to escape the weight of people's eyes on you. I incorporated elements of airbrushed art, the Paleta Payaso (clown lolipop), and payaso makeup in homage to my Mexican heritage. Some images may be cropped. I made this calendar page as part of a class project in my Observational Drawing class with JT Steiny, one of my favorite professors. Each student made their own page for each month of the year, and I got July. Since I love bugs, I decided to incorperate a lady bug and bee into the design with a western/summery feel. I think it has a nice cohesive look and represnts that whimsical element I appreciate in illustrative artwork.

This was my 'Icebreaker' project for my first year at Otis when I transferred. I wanted to take the 'Icebreaker' title literally and embrace the sort of pain and changes I was going through. I had started living away from home for the first time and became nervous. I felt like I was ripping myself away from everything I was familiar with, and was lonely before I made friends. This is an ode to those feelings and thoughts of change, and I am proud of how colorful and interesting it is to look at.

My name is Milan Segura and I am an artist and designer from Northern California.
I work digitally and traditionally and enjoy creating pieces that focus on a wide
range of subject matter- from social issues and political topics, to aesthetics based
work focusing on the value of color and layout. I also firmly believe that visual
art at times should be digested simply for the joy, whimsy, aesthetic value, or humor
that can be found in it.
