Design Lab was hired to create an elegant and uplifting identity for the Japanese American National Museum’s annual Benefit Gala. As the institution’s sole fundraising event of the year, this Gala is an important touchpoint for both the museum and the surrounding community. The design is intended to promote the future of the museum while celebrating Japanese-American history and culture.
The designers began the project with a deep dive into Japanese-American history including a tour of the Japanese American National Museum and by walking through Little Tokyo. They continued their research with an exploration of prominent artists, authors, and entrepreneurs within the community - seeking themes among the varied voices and experiences.
The selected design concept utilizes the visual of tree rings to represent the expanding and connecting of generations - a theme that arose during the research phase. With a dynamic color palette that reflects JANM’s branding, this visual language also conveys harmony, community, and the union of cultures.
