Lezly Saar is a Los Angeles based artist whose works include painting and mixed media. Her surreal yet tender paintings, inspired by Saar’s son who has been transitioning from female to male over the past several years, explore issues of gender identity and fluidity, scrambling expectations about race and what it means to be human. In addition to these paintings, she makes large-scale fabric banners that prominently display portraits of women. fusing the African-American quilting tradition with European tropes of portraiture.
