February is Open Reading Period at Otis Books

Seeking Submissions of Poetry, Fiction, or Non-Fiction

Otis Books publishes books of contemporary fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, with a special interest in translations and writings from and about Los Angeles. To date Otis Books has published over 40 titles, most recently Beginnings by Alan Loney, The Wilderness After Which by L.S. Klatt, and Caesura: Essays by Gary McDowell.

The press is offering an open reading period for the month of February 2017. Submissions of manuscripts of poetry, fiction, or non-fiction, in the English original or in translation are welcome, including work of previously unpublished writers, as well as established writers. There is no reading fee and simultaneous submissions are allowed. For manuscript requirements and the notification timeline, visit

Otis Books is the publication project of the MFA Writing Program at Otis College of Art and Design. Students are involved in all aspects of the press’ activities, from selecting and editing manuscripts to designing books, managing production, and getting published titles out into the world. Faculty in the writing program include Paul Vangelisti, author of over 30 books of poetry and founder of small press Magra Books, New York Times bestselling author Marisa Silver, poet and translator Guy Bennett, whose Ce livre was recently published by Éditions de l'Attente in Bordeaux, to name a few. 

The MFA Writing program also hosts a Visiting Writers Series featuring celebrated contemporary authors, poets, and essayists. Past speakers have included Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen, poet Tonya Foster and Delicious Foods author James Hannaham. The next Visiting Writers Series will feature Robin Coste Lewis, whose Voyage of the Sable Venus won the National Book Award.
