“The Fashion program is definitely very intense. They do prepare us for the working world,” says Magdalena Lee (BFA Fashion Design ‘17). Magdalena won two of the department’s prestigious Silver Thimble awards, which are presented by professional mentors.
“It was pretty amazing being up on the runway with the model and my mentor. It was like a dream,” she says. Her 2017 collection under the mentorship of Chris Chang (‘87) used Nantong blue calico fabrics she hand-painted with a koi fish pattern. “Fishing has always been a part of my childhood, and I’ve been up to Alaska every summer fishing,” says Magdalena. “I was able to put part of me into this garment. That’s why I feel like it really represents me and who I am, by mirroring my two interests together.”
