In post-war American abstraction, wet became the new deep. The idea of wetness became a primary metaphor for a whole manner of painting in which the fluidity of the surface provides the narrativity once provided by pictorial depth. Since most wet painting in recent years has been in the figurative idiom, Guest Curator Dave Hickey revisits this tradition of abstraction in some of its current manifestations in Southern California where the language of liquidity has its own iconography.

In this Los Angeles debut exhibition, the curator reunites the video work of five artists from Barcelona who have exhibited at the Centre d’Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona (CASM) as part of the institution’s mission to support new work by local and international artists. Mr. Barenblit’s selection reflects on three primary themes he consistently finds in the work of so many contemporary artists: the continuous critique of reality and its underlying inherent contradictions; the power of the moving image in contemporary culture; and the role of the individual in a conflicted society.

Cruise and Destroy: The Imagination of Fat Mark Bikes

New low-rider bicycles designed and created by Fat Mark Kaake and his crew of collaborators: Jim Muir, CR Stecyk, Opie Ortiz, Swankone, Justin Reynolds, Steve Fawley, Marco Saiz, Josh Knight, and Skully.
Fat Mark scours vintage-bike swap meets across the U.S. for parts and collaborates with artists to do special paintwork on the converted bikes. With the support of his mentor and legendary Dogtown photographer Craig Stecyk, he has developed a signature style and a creative network of talented artists to help him articulate his aesthetic vision.

Robert Williams: Through Prehensile Eyes

Solo show by Robert Williams, godfather of the Low Brow art movement in Southern California and creator of Juxtapoz magazine. The exhibition features approximately 45 paintings from 1979-present with related sketches and ephemera, and two of his custom hotrods. It is curated by Meg Linton and funded in part by the Pasadena Art Alliance and Juxtapoz Magazine.
