Academic Awards

An Otis education is widely known for its academic rigor and educational excellence.  The College recognizes the highest level of achievement with the Valedictory Award, Academic Excellence Awards, Distinction in Studio Awards, and Honors.

2020 Valedictory Award

Product Deisgn major Phuong Pham has been named Valedictorian of the Class of 2020. This award is bestowed annually on the member of the senior class whose work represents the pinnacle of academic excellence. This graduate receives a special medallion and presents an address to be included in this year's Commencement recognition. Phuong was chosen for her continuously stellar academic performance throughout her Otis College career and the exceptional quality of her studio work. There are two constant themes throughout Phuong’s life in that she is always challenging herself and helping others. Pham's past experiences shape her approach to design by way of in-depth research, critical thinking, and a devotion to sustainable methodologies.

valedictorian 2020

As an immigrated child from Vietnam, Phuong had to learn early on how to adapt and navigate the cultural barriers within her new home in America. As she grew older, she looked for challenges in academics. This included studying foreign languages, getting involved with environmental conservation, and exploring her higher education in other states. Phuong became very passionate about education because she witnessed how good education really helped her overcome difficulties. Working in education as a content creator for educational game products sparked her interest in product design. Phuong recalls, “It didn't feel like a light bulb turned on, but an entire stadium lighting up all at once.” For Phuong, Product Design is a world of challenges and felt like a natural fit. Some of her projects include a shower chair for seniors, a fire alert system to assist with wildfire evacuations, and a toy sharing app to encourage recycling toys. The biggest ambition for her career is to completely change how products are created and discarded to more sustainable and environmentally conscious methods.

A talented, intelligent, and profoundly dedicated designer that betters the world that surrounds her with mindfulness, adeptness, and vision, Phuong truly embodies the aspirations of Otis College. Samples of her work may be seen at here. You can also view the Valedictorian Commencement address here.
