As a woman and African American, who grew up in a predominantly Black community, my artistic research involves the history and representation of black bodies. Through interdisciplinary artmaking, I unveil the scars of social and racial injustice. Systematic oppression continues to frame the voice of those oppressed, meanwhile creating internalized oppression. I frame black bodies in ways which empower and celebrate their existence. Furthermore, I seek to showcase the lives of those who are underrepresented through employing geographical context, the work engages history, the nature of places, and those affected. In response, I use photography to frame the racial hierarchies used to dispel the guilt and responsibility of privilege, meanwhile creating positive representations of African Americans.
